the u.s. has blundrd into the scenario with one overreaction or another. bin laden needs to be the object of our hoss tilts, national security and contempt and deserves to be taken seriously. but most of what he has achieved we do ourselves. bin laden does not deserve that we even inadvertently fuffleful unimagined dreams. here's more from the president friday at this news conference. i think in this day and age there is always going to be the potential for an individual or a small group of individuals, if they are willing to die, to kill other people. some of them are going to be very well organized and some of them are going to be random. that threat is there and it's important, i think, for the american people to understand that and not to live in fear. it's just a reality of today's world that there are going to be threats out there. we have i think greatly improved our homeland security security since 9/11 occurred. you know, i am constantly impressed with the dedication that our teams apply to this problem. they are chasing down every threat, not just from al qaeda

in the times. also with us, mickey edwards, currently director of the aspen institute, rodel fellowships. appreciate both you being with us. the charities are all legit. they seem to be doing good work. what is wrong with this? >> i think what if shows, is that washington is a creative place. there's billions of dollars at stake, these corporations have again des they want to push, and they are constantly looking for ways they can work within the rules to influence members of congress. and they've discovered that one way is to give donations to charities that they have founded that they care about, and that impresses the members of congress, and there seems to be a correlation between those donations to those charities and the positions frequently that members of congress take. >> for the congressperson, besides just doing good work in their community, it's another way of campaigning, it lets them get out there, get local press coverage in a positive way, right? >> it serves a lot of purposes for the corporation. it's a tax deductible gift. they're supporting causes that are quite worthy

rocks at passing american con voice. and there were protests in indonesia. u.s. general david petraeus has warned the anger is so intense, the pastor's actions could endanger u.s. troops in afghanistan and could actually end up helping the taliban. nbc's tom aspell is in kabul, afghanistan. what's the big concern if the pastor goes through on his threat to burn the koran? >> well, contessa, simply that afghans will react violently to it. now, general david petraeus in an e-mail in response to questions from the associated press about the affair said today, images of a koran burning would undoubtedly be used by extremists on both sides, in afghanistan and around the world to enflame public opinion and to incite violence. he went further, he said, burning of a koran would put the safety of our troops and american civilians in afghanistan at risk, and would also compromise the mission here. i think what the general is saying is that afghans are in danger of going into the streets and turning against any american military they see, any american civilians. there is precedent for unrest like

that something's wrong. something is wrong. it is possibly time for us in a new way to actually stand up, confront terrorism. there is something very much wrong with our policies. >> and so we hear from pastor jones, who we have not seen here today. he may be in the church, he may not be. we do know that he has a scheduled interview with a local conservative radio station and i'm told that the pastor's son may come out and speak on behalf of his father today. of course, the associate pastor has spoken, as well. all seem to be in lock step with his belief that burning the koran is sending an important message. tamron, clearly, a lot of pressure here to give you sort of an example of who's showing up here to try to meet with the pastor. the association of evangelical ministers showed up. they said they represent 430 members from around the world. they came here to say, please don't do this. we have, we have missionaries around the world. they'll be targeted. so, a lot of attention. >> kerry, couple things here. senator john mccain just tweeted saying pastor jones' threats to burn the koran
